Before priming, I treated all siding and trim with a rot-resistant, water-repellent wood preservative to add a protective layer, ensuring the wood remains safeguarded even if the paint fails over time. To guarantee adequate coating, I constructed a wooden dunk tank, applied Flex Seal to create a rubber membrane, and immersed the siding in the preservative liquid for several minutes. Once dried and cured, I confirmed the effectiveness of the preservative by observing water beading off the wood surface. Subsequently, I applied 2-3 coats of oil-based primer to all sides of the boards.
I also painted the end grain of the siding with Rust-Oleum Enamel Spray Primer and Rust-Oleum High Performance High Gloss Enamel Spray Paint, resulting in a durable, rubber-like surface. For installation, I used scarf joints for aesthetic appeal and improved water resistance compared to butt joints. Boards adjacent to the foundation were taped with zip tape to create a gasket layer between the siding and foundation.
Lastly, I used a nailing pattern that involved using a 15-gauge Nailer to nail the tongue of the board, avoiding face nailing with large siding nails. This method is sufficient for holding the boards and results in smaller nail holes.
